Figueres – Costa Brava

Figueres is in the province of Girona, 1 hour and a half from Barcelona. It is a pleasant town with an attractive centre, a large castle and a café-lined 'rambla'. However it is for the Salvador Dali museum that large numbers of visitors come each year. Indeed, the Salvador Dali Museum (Teatre-Museu Dali) is the most visited museum in Spain after the Prado in Madrid and the Guggenheim in Bilbao. On its ruins, Dalí decided to create his museum. The building has a large glass dome and its edges are decorated by large egg shapes. It is, in its entirety, Dali's greatest work, and was created by Dali specifically to offer its visitors a unique visual experience. In Figueres we also find, 18th century castle Castell de Sant Ferran. This is a popular place as you can walk (or jog) around its 3km perimeter. It offers excellent views over the sea. It is possible to look around the interior as well and there is a café inside. Figueres Rambla is the main street in Figueres and like the Rambla in Barcelona it is a popular spot for meeting and sitting at one of the many pavement cafes to drink a coffee or eat lunch. At the bottom of La Rambla there is a painting on the floor, 'the Face of Dali' which is a popular homage to Salvador Dali. The old streets around the Rambla are very pleasant to walk around and to make some great shopping.

Sitges – Costa Dorada

20 miles south of Barcelona, you’ll find Sitges' beautiful beaches and peaceful mountains. The Catalan wealthy made it a fashionable resort at the turn of the 19th-20th century. At the same time, Modernist artist Santiago Rusinyol discovered its charms and attracted a colony of Modernist artists and intellectuals to his house there, now the Museum Cau Ferrat. Sitges has wisely preserved its Modernist past in the streets and buildings of the old quarter, and the charm of this seaside town remains intact. You can start you tour with a waterfront promenade where you will find century mansions, enter the old quarter and find Palau Maricel. Approach Cau Ferrat (Santiago Russinyol's house, currently closed for restoration) and end your tour in Sant Sebastià Beach, you must know that Sitges is also perfect for a day at the beach.

Montserrat

Montserrat Mountains are very well-known worldwide. "Montserrat" literally means "jagged (serrated) mountain" in Catalan. It describes its peculiar aspect with multitude of rock formations which are visible from a great distance. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock. Montserrat is Spain's first National Park. It is well known as the site of the Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth. The Abbey can be reached by road, by the Aeri de Montserrat cable car, or by the Montserrat Rack Railway.

Caves Codorniu (Codorniu Cellars)

Among the vineyards in the town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (Barcelona), you will find some of the largest cellars in the world. The first bottle of Spanish cava was produced here in 1872. The architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who, together with Gaudí, was one of the leading representatives of the great Catalan modernist architectural school, was in charge of the design and construction of the winery. This is the ideal place to follow the whole process from grape pressing to the labeling of the bottle. This wine ferments at least 9 months in the bottle, in the dark, still and constant temperature of the underground cellars. After a short video, you’ll visit the vast cellars in a small electric train. The French invented the method and called it Champagne. In Spain wine made by the same method is called Cava. The varieties of grape are local: Xarel•lo, Macabeu and Parellada although lately Chardonnay has been introduced. Cava can be produced using one variety alone but a mixture is usually used - the coupage - to obtain a subtle mix of tastes and scents to which the winegrowers add their personal touch.

Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia is maybe the main symbol of Barcelona. The foundation stone of La Sagrada Família was laid on 19 March 1882, at a solemn event presided by the bishop of Barcelona, Josep Urquinaona. The Building then began with the crypt beneath the apse after a neo-Gothic design by the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano. A short time later, owing to disagreements with the promoters, he resigned and the commission was handed over to Antoni Gaudí, who after 1914 devoted himself exclusively to building La Sagrada Família, which is why there are no other major works from the last years of his life. After undertaking the project in 1883, Gaudí built the crypt, which was finished in 1889. As he started work on the apse (and the cloister), everything went at a good pace thanks to the donations. When he received a large anonymous one, he thought of doing a new, bigger work: he discarded the old neo-Gothic project and proposed a more monumental and innovatory one in terms of both forms and structures and the construction.
Opening time: Open daily. From October to March: 9 am to 6 pm / From April to September: 9 am to 8 am Price: 13€

The “Apple” of discord: Casa Batlló / Casa Lleó i Morera / Casa Amatller

The block of Discord or Apple of Discord is noted for having buildings by five of Barcelona's most important Modernistarchitects in close proximity. The houses are the Casa Lleó-Morera, at Passeig de Gràcia 35, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner; Casa Mulleras, at Passeig de Gràcia 37, designed by Enric Sagnier; Casa Bonet, at Passeig de Gràcia 39, designed by Marcel·lí Coquillat i Llofriu; Casa Amatller, at Passeig de Gràcia 41, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch; and Casa Batlló, at Passeig de Gràcia 43, designed by Antoni Gaudí. As the four architects' styles were very different, the buildings clash with each other and the neighboring buildings. They were all built in the early years of the 20th century. Due to the presence of these famous landmark buildings, the block is a significant tourist attraction in Barcelona. The name in Spanish, Manzana de la Discordia, is a play on words: manzanameans both "city block" and "apple," referencing the Apple of Discord.

La Boqueria Market

Boqueria Market” is a space full of life, history and architectural value. The first of Barcelona’s local markets was opened on Saint Joseph’s day, on the 19th of March 1840, after four years of work on the land that was up until then occupied by Saint Joseph’s convent. However, the history goes back a good few years before, because on the site on La Rambla where the market is today, there were already peddlers selling meat in the thirteenth century. The market officially opened in the same year, but the plans for the building were modified many many times. The inauguration of the structure finally took place in 1853. A new fish market opened in 1911, and the metal roof that still exists today was constructed in 1914. This Market is a space with a magnificent explosion of colors, smells and textures, and high quality products! If you want to try or buy for your family and friends some cured ham (jamón ibérico), sausages, wines... this is the best place to do that. You can not miss La Boqueria Market!

It was decided to rebuild and improve the emblematic building and to create a new legal framework to put it under public ownership. It opened its doors again on 7thOctober 1999. Nowadays, they offer lots of theaterand opera plays. If you walk nearby, pay attention: you can hear some of the singers rehearsing an operainside the building for the next show.

Palau de la Música Catalana

Built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, thePalau de la Música Catalana is one of the most unique concert venues in the world and one of the most representative monuments of Catalan Modernism, which was built for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença(Catalan Rebirth). In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building outsides are very beautiful, but the insides are amazing. Due toits wide variety of concerts we suggest you look at the billboard if you fancy going to a concert in a spectacular place.

Perfect end DAY 1

To end in a perfect way your first wonderful (and tiring!) day in Barcelona, we suggest you to have a lovely dinner in La Barceloneta Quarter. One of the “must” restaurants in this area is “El Merendero de la Mari” (paella, fish and sea food Restaurant), although there are a lot more and we love all of them! Have a walk, choose a nice Restaurant and enjoy the views over La Barceloneta harbour.
OUR TIP: If you feel very tired you can get bus number 59 from La Boqueria Market and you will be in La Barceloneta in 10 minutes. The same bus takes you back to Hotel Curious in 10 minutes from La Barceloneta.

Perfect end DAY 3

At this point, we suggest you 2 options to end this wonderful day in Barcelona:

Option 1:
Having dinner at Poble Sec is also a very good option. There are many local tapas restaurants at c/ Blai. We specially recommend you “Quimet, Quimet”. We warn you that this place is very small but it's worth it!

Option 2:
Taking the Cable Car called “Transbordador Aeri del Port” (open until 7 pm) from Montjuïc Mountain to La Barceloneta Quarter and visit:

  • La Barceloneta
La Barceloneta Quarter is the old fisherman quarter of Barcelona. It still has a humble familiar environment although it is now full of really good restaurants of fish, sea food and paella.

  • Maremàgnum
Maremagnum is one of the most lively areas of Barcelona. There you will find restaurants, discos, shops, regular cinemas, the Imax 3D Cinema, the Aquarium... All this surrounded by the sea, with lovely views over the city. It's 10 minutes walk from Hotel Curious!

  • Olympic Port
The Olimpic Port is marina and it was build for the Olympics in 1992, held that year in Barcelona. By day you can eat at any seafood restaurant and in the evening you can enjoy there the wide and fun nightlife it offers. Having dinner at the Olimpic Port is a great option for a perfect closure. There are many good restaurants there, but we can recommend Opium Mar, Agua or Shöko. OUR TIP: To come back to Hotel Curious after the dinner or after a tasty drink, you can take bus 59 (until 10 pm), metro L4+L3 or taxi.
