Barcelona's opera house “Gran Teatre del Liceu”, was founded on Las Ramblas in 1847 and has continued over the years to fulfil its role as a culture and arts centre and one of the many symbols of the city. The fire that destroyed the Auditorium and stage on 31stJanuary 1994 caused a great impact on Catalan society and the Liceu's very existence was called into question. It was decided to rebuild and improve the emblematic building and to create a new legal framework to put it under public ownership. It opened its doors again on 7thOctober 1999. Nowadays, they offer lots of theaterand opera plays. If you walk nearby, pay attention: you can hear some of the singers rehearsing an operainside the building for the next show.
