The Castle of Montjuic is located at the heart of Montjuic Mountain. In 1022 it was built the first building in Montjuic, a watchtower called "Farrell Tower". In 1640 they arose a fortification during the War of Reapers (Guerra dels Segadors), for use as a defense. Napoleon's troops were stationed there during the invasion of 1808 and two years later it began to be used as a prison. During the twentieth century it was used as a place of execution after the Spanish Civil War. In 1960 the castle was given to the city with the condition that it was used as a military museum and since 2007 and by ministerial order, the Montjuic Castle is owned by all citizens of Barcelona.
